ARCANE DEVICE 11 - ENVOI IN CUMIN

Originally released on the PlayLoud label, Portugal. Remastered at Pulsewidth, 2021.

Technical Note (1993)

All sounds on this recording are produced with the Feedback Machine apparatus which has been under constant development and expansion since its inception in 1987. In brief, custom circuitry defines numerous and continuously varying signal paths to, from, and within a bank of digital time delay devices. A device which sees its output at its own input is shocked into feedback oscillation; this is the initial germ from which all further sounds are derived.

Envoi in Cumin utilizes what may be called a “soft loop.” The seesawing pattern on which the piece is based never literally repeats itself—even its time period remains unfixed. If you attempt to time this cycle with a stopwatch, you will obtain readings varying between approximately seven and fifteen seconds; but in fact in the bank of delay units used, none is set for as long as one second. The sound which attempts to complete a feedback path must navigate a complex, ever-changing web of possible routes. Therefore the characteristic “hard loop” image of a snake consuming its own tail shifts into one in which the snake’s body becomes not a single solid, but a vast interpenetrating web. The snake itself grows and contracts in length and breadth in a sort of irregular breathing action.

In this manner, Envoi in Cumin escapes rigid deterministic form normally thought to characterize “scientific” electronic structures, and liberates electron flow to create ever changing pattern and form. Thus, this work represents perhaps my most successful effort to date in the attempt to allow electrons to create a self determined shape and dynamic, showing their place as an element of Great Nature.
